How the calculations work

Both calculators use the formulas of the World Handicap System, which is used by golfers around the world.

Score differential

Score Differential = (113 ÷ Slope Rating) × (Adjusted Gross Score − Course Rating − PCC)

Your adjusted gross score is your score after capping any hole at net double bogey (par + 2 + any handicap strokes you receive on that hole). PCC is the playing conditions calculation — a small daily adjustment, usually zero. The result is rounded to one decimal place.

Course handicap

Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope Rating ÷ 113) + (Course Rating − Par)

The result is rounded to the nearest whole number. For competitions, the committee may apply a handicap allowance, giving your playing handicap.

Your Handicap Index

Once you have 20 scores, your Handicap Index is the average of your best 8 score differentials from your most recent 20 rounds. Your official index is calculated by your golf club or national association; these tools are for estimates and learning.
